#1 Mask Assembly in February

The project began with a Mask Assembly in February. The Art 1 and preschool students were introduced to visiting artist Jeff Semmerling. He entertained students as he performed to music for them while wearing his handmade masks.

#2 Constructing the Masks







After researching masks from around the world in the computer lab, students began constructing their own masks from cardboard.

#3 Mask Magic


Jeff shared his own masks. He also showed students a slideshow of Mardi Gras masks in New Orleans.

#4 Papier Mache
















Jeff demonstrated adding papier mache to the cardboard masks. The masks were primed with white paint when construction was complete.

#5 Painting and Finishing the Masks

The students paint their masks after Jeff demonstrates a painting technique that included blending and using warm and cool colors to create depth.
